My mother used to work in a huge hospital in Fresno, CA. While there, she encountered gypsies on a regular basis. She said that when they were scheduled to come in to deliver a baby, the nurses would go through each of the rooms on the floor making sure cabinets were locked, remote controls were duct taped shut (so they couldn’t steal the batteries) and they even had to nail down all the lamps, bolt the tables and night stands to the floor or wall and zip tie all of the blankets together tied off to one corner of the bed. Every dish, spoon or cup that came into the room had to have the room number written on it and inventory had to be taken before the attendant could leave the room with the dirty dishes.
Apparently, the gypsies were notorious for taking anything that wasn’t nailed down, even the toilet paper rolls and paper towels in the dispensers. They always came in as a huge group to cause a distraction while they then sent the smaller children to pilfer through other patient’s belongings or to sneak around taking things off the nurses desks. I’m not saying these were bad people, but they definitely needed to be watched closely. It wasn’t uncommon for security to be posted outside their rooms, either, because they usually got pretty loud and demanding.
