“When I was a kid, I had an experience that changed my life forever. One day, while I was out, I came across a young boy sitting in the park, soaked by the rain. He looked lost, confused, and alone. As I struck up a conversation with him, he explained that he had just returned from school, only to find that his mother had abandoned him. She hadn’t left a note, no phone number, no forwarding address—nothing. He was left without any idea of where to go, and the only place he could think of was to sit there in the park, hoping for something to change.
I couldn’t just leave him there. So, I brought him home, introduced him to my mom, and told her what had happened. My mom, being the amazing, loving woman she is, didn’t hesitate for a second. She welcomed him into our home, and from that moment, he became part of our family. Over time, he built a new life, and my mom became a grandmother figure to his children.
That was 24 years ago. Since then, we’ve stayed close, and he’s remained a beloved member of our family. The photo I’m sharing is from last week, taken at his daughter’s college graduation. My mom, now a proud and loving grandmother, was there to cheer her on, just like she’s been there for him through every step of his journey. It’s incredible to look back and see how much has changed, but what hasn’t changed is the love, support, and kindness that have always been there. We’re family, and we always will be.”
