In one of the greatest scenes in one of the greatest films ever, “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly”, a Mexican bandit names Tuco Ramirez is enjoying a bath. An old enemy enters the room unexpected, believing Tuco is unarmed…
He isn’t, of course — Tuco is very much armed. The man always comes prepared. But his would-be killer just keeps blabbing.
Finally, Tuco has enough. Reaches for his gun and shoots the guy dead, saying: “When you have to shoot, shoot! Don’t talk!”
And this is something you always see in movies — the killer talks too much. He wants to explain, first, his motivation for killing you. His grand plan. Lay it all out there, so you REALLY “get it”, and understand why he will do what he’s about to do… they savor the moment, they try to make it last longer. And they somehow always give up the advantage they have by being too chatty, allowing the protagonist to find his or her way out of the predicament…
In real life, the bad guys will shoot, not talk. When they meet their “Tuco”, they don’t give him an opportunity to reach for his gun because they know the age old wisdom applies: “More talk, more mistake.”
