This is John. He was my Uber driver on the way to the airport yesterday. He asked why I was traveling, and I said it was for work. Then he asked if I was about 28. I said 27.

John told me that his daughter passed away unexpectedly when she was 29. He tried to save her, but he found her too late. He said he was holding his son when his own father passed away.

“I wish I could’ve done more. Why couldn’t I bring her back?” he said, his voice full of pain.

Then he said, “I’m so sorry for all of this. I haven’t met anyone so kind and understanding. You made me feel like I had someone to talk to.”

He gently patted my arm and added, “Please don’t let the world change you. Keep smiling, keep being kind. You’ve shown me how much kindness a stranger can offer. You never know what someone is going through, especially behind the smile they’re hiding behind. Thank you, sweet girl.”

Be kind to others. Always. Show compassion, listen to people, ask how their day is going, smile at strangers, say hello in the store, and do little acts of kindness every day. Start a conversation with your Uber driver. It might mean more to them than you realize and help them in ways you can’t even imagine. ❤️
