Attractive teenagers.
Goddamn it, does this kill me every time I see it.
High school sucks. We all know that. It smells like crap, everyone looks awkward, and the hallways are filled of people who either pretend to know what they’re doing when they’re talking to someone of the opposite sex or just give up altogether on scoring a win.
But screenwriters seem to have completely forgotten that.
Let’s start simple.
In most teen movies, the teenage protagonists look like they’re almost thirty years old. They also talk like they’re thirty, not like they’re struggling to finish a simple sentence as most of us teenagers do when we actually speak. They dress well, they dance well, they are absolutely not self-conscious, and, above all, they look like they were ripped straight out of a fashion magazine.
As an example, let’s take someone from Netflix’s Elite:
Look at this guy.
Look very closely.
Notice the little details, like those firm muscles and perfect pectorals, and his symmetrical face, and a haircut that actually suits him. Notice how careless he looks, how truly confident, even when shirtless.
No teenager looks or acts like this. None. Zero. Nada.
I’m tired of filmmakers portraying high school as they wish it had been instead of as it actually is. I’m a high school student myself, and it sucks thay I barely get to feel like I see myself whenever I watch a movie that’s supposed to be about my demographic.
