Today, my beautiful girl said, “I’m not normal

Today, my beautiful girl said, “I’m not normal.”

When I asked her what she meant, she pointed to her brain.

I felt like crying and wanted to break down, but I knew I couldn’t. Not for her. I told her, “No, you’re not normal. You’re extraordinary.”

My daughter is on the spectrum. She doesn’t always do things like other people, and that makes her special and beautiful.

I can’t help but worry that someone said this to her, and that really hurts my heart.

Please, encourage your children to embrace all their friends and the differences they have.

And please, adults, do the same.

Let’s make children feel like they are extraordinary. They’re only little once, and they remember every word. Kids aren’t as tough as we often say. They feel pain, and that pain stays with them as they grow up. They deserve our love now, even if they’re not like other kids.
