Today, I was driving home to grab a quick snack when I saw an old man standing by the road with his walker, holding his thumb out, trying to get a ride. Something about him made me stop, so I turned around and went back to see if he needed help. When I asked if he was okay, he said he was trying to get to the dollar store about 1.5 miles away.
I thought he might need some food, so I offered to give him a ride.
While we were driving, I asked him some questions:
“How old are you?”
“93,” he said.
“What’s your name?”
“Mike.”
“Are you married?”
“Yes, my wife is 94. Her name is Doris.”
“Does she know you’re out?”
“No, she probably hasn’t even started looking for me yet.”
I asked, “Why are we going to the store?”
He smiled and said, “My wife and I like to share a Hershey chocolate bar every night, but we’re out, so I need to buy 30 Hershey Bars.”
Before I dropped him off, I gave him my card and said, “Next time you need chocolate, don’t hitch a ride. Just call me. I’d love to meet Doris.”
