Richard Stern, a Jewish World War I veteran, wears his Iron Cross as a Nazi soldier stands outside his shop trying to intimidate him, 1933.
Stern immigrated to the United States in 1939, just months before World War II began. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 at the age of 43 and fought directly against the Nazis in battles throughout Italy.
He was awarded the Silver Star (the third highest American combat decoration) in 1944. He donated the Iron Cross he was wearing in the photo to the U.S. scrap metal program to make bullets for the war effort. Richard Stern died in 1967.
