On January 6, about 20 minutes after JetBlue flight 1721 took off for Jamaica, an older woman started having trouble breathing.
A nurse sitting nearby rushed to help, but nothing seemed to work. That’s when Matthew (one of John’s partners) saw how serious things were and stepped in. He quickly got John’s attention as the woman stopped breathing completely.
The two men worked together using the plane’s oxygen tanks and air bags to create what they needed to keep her alive. They gave her oxygen for 45 minutes, right there in the aisle, while the plane made an emergency landing in Fort Lauderdale—just like Matthew and John had advised the crew to do.
Watching my husband and his friend take action was both scary and amazing. It’s what they do for a living—save lives—but seeing it happen up close was something else. What touched me most was how many people were praying and supporting them the whole time.
It reminded me that in the end, we’re all just people. And when someone’s life is on the line, we come together because life matters to all of us.
