Last night was a stark reminder of why we should always pay attention to our pets! Bedtime came early for the kids, and the house was finally quiet, with just Shane Gillis playing softly on the TV. That’s when our dog, Archie, started whining. And I mean, he really needed to go out.
I got up, a little annoyed, and walked into the living room. Archie jumped onto the couch and continued to whine, looking directly at me. As I reached the living room, I noticed something else—the room was filling with smoke!
Turns out, a candle on our fireplace mantel hadn’t been fully extinguished and had gotten so hot it was burning right into the wood below it. We quickly handled the situation, but when I opened the cabinet directly underneath, my heart sank. The items inside were scalding hot, and the wood had already started to smolder. We were incredibly lucky.
This was such a close call, and it made me realize something important. Our dogs try to communicate with us in their own ways. Don’t get angry, and don’t brush them off. Listen to them. They might just be trying to tell you something incredibly important, and it could prevent a serious disaster.
