I truly believe cats remember everything. If I were ever left without food, water, or shelter, I know I would remember—and so do they.
Throughout the years, I’ve always seemed to attract stray cats—and occasionally dogs. Right now, I care for 8 cats of my own, and I help look after 7 more at a friend’s place. Two of mine are rescues; the rest showed up on their own, seeking safety.
The most recent addition to my family is a sweet little mama cat who wandered in one evening, very pregnant and incredibly thin. You could tell she had once belonged to someone—she was too gentle not to have known love. The next day—Easter, of all days—she gave birth to her kittens right on my bed. I helped deliver the last one, cutting the cord and clearing the sac.
I kept her and the kittens in my room until they were old enough to find homes. She was spayed soon after, and while she sometimes wanders, she mostly stays close by.
She watches me leave for work and waits faithfully at the door for me to return. She’s mine for life—just like all my others. I’ll never understand how anyone can treat animals like they’re disposable.
