Because her dad was in the military for so long, Addie, who is 9, has learned to cope with his absences. But today, I had to watch my daughter’s heart break as every other cheerleader got to perform with their dad present. It was probably the hardest thing to watch.
Then, something amazing happened. A young man from the next cheer squad—someone Addie had never met—saw that she was crying and alone. He climbed the fence, picked her up, and put her on his shoulders, just like the other dads had done. I couldn’t help but cry as I watched it happen.
Addie said, “I just felt like somebody saved me.” It made her feel better knowing her dad is out there serving, and it made me feel so grateful to this kind young man who took the time to make her feel special. Her dad and I are so thankful for his thoughtful kindness.
