At the shelter they told me he wasn’t attached to anyone

At the shelter they told me he wasn’t attached to anyone. That he was too old, too callous, indifferent. I brought him home with no expectations. I just wanted him to have a dignified end.

But today, when I got home from work and opened the door… there he was. Standing there, waiting. For the first time. He saw me and wagged his tail slowly. He didn’t even bark. He just stood there. I knelt down and cried. Not out of sadness, but because, after so much of his life being ignored, he chose to wait. I took a selfie with him right there on the doorstep. My tag on my chest, him clinging to me. The best welcome I’ve ever had.
