In 1990, British Airways Flight 5390 faced a terrifying emergency when a cockpit windscreen panel came loose at 17,000 feet, pulling the captain halfway out of the plane.

Flight attendant Nigel Ogden, who had just entered the cockpit, quickly grabbed the pilot and held on for more than 20 minutes while the copilot carried out an emergency landing.

Even in freezing temperatures and with strong winds, Ogden’s grip stopped the situation from becoming worse, as the pilot’s body could have caused serious damage if it had come free.

The plane landed safely in Southampton. The captain survived with frostbite and several broken bones, while Ogden suffered frostbite, a dislocated shoulder, and injuries to his face.
