At 3 p.m. on January 27, 1945, 21-year-old Red Army Major David Dushman broke through Auschwitz’s electric fence with his tank, starting the camp’s famous liberation.

At that time, David and his friends didn’t know what Auschwitz really was. It was only years later that they and the world learned about the terrible things that happened there.

Still, his brave act with the tank helped begin the freeing of this cruel camp, where the Nazis had killed over 1 million people in just five years.
