“When I was a junior in high school, a guy named James, who has Down syndrome, asked me to go to prom with him.”
“Nobody else wanted to go with him. When he asked me, I said yes without thinking too much about it. I remember his mom called me, crying and thanking me for saying yes. She even offered to pay for my dress, hair, and makeup because she knew no one else would go with him. I told her it was okay and that I was happy to go with him.”
“I hung up the phone and started crying, feeling so honored to be going with him. At prom, it was hard to enjoy at first because James was a little all over the place, but then I realized it was his senior prom, not mine. So, I went along with whatever he wanted to do, and I ended up having so much fun! Out of the four proms I went to in high school, this one was my favorite.”
