26 years ago today a boy came to pick up and take me out to dinner.
He was wearing a Structure shirt and jeans. Structure was one of the “it” stores in the 90s.
Perfectly handsome and with sunflowers in his hand, he led me to his silver z28 Camaro.
He opened the door and told me we were going to Olive Garden.
So fancy, I know.
For a sixteen-year-old girl, it was fancy indeed.
We broke bread, and he asked me to be his girlfriend.
Of course, I said, “Yes!”
We had been “talking” for a little over a month.
Talking is what we called dating in the 90s.
Now, it was official! I was his girlfriend!
As we say in Spanish, “Cómo ha llovido desde entonces!” Meaning, that it has rained a lot since then.
Life moved us to different cities and across the country.
We have had our downs, but more ups.
Those Ross and Rachel breaks when we were younger only made us stronger.
We grew up together, and that is never easy.
I think back to that meal at Olive Garden and how many times we’ve broken bread since that day.
Some meals have been quieter than others.
Many have been full of love and plenty of laughter.
We’ve broken bread in different circles and with many loved ones.
Some are no longer here, watching over us from Heaven.
Some we have lost contact with because life happens.
But we are the constant that remained.
Always in one another’s orbit as though God knew we need one another on this journey.
