20-year-old Melody Hoffman of Marion, Iowa, was born with intellectual disability that affected her relationship with others. In 2023 when she met McKinley Louisma, she thought she had met the love of her life.
The two became lovers, but what Melody didn’t know was that Louisma was still seeing his ex-girlfriend. In January 2024, Louisma abruptly ended their relationship to reconcile with his long-term girlfriend, who by this time was pregnant with his child.

Fearing that Melody whom he suspected was pregnant was going to ruin his relationship with his long-term girlfriend, Louisma planned with his friends to end Melody’s life.
On the night of February 17, he lured her to a remote location where they bound her, stabbed her severally, before leaving her to die.
Investigators quickly identified the perpetrators through clues they left behind. Louisma has been sentenced to life in prison.
