1.20 Meters Tall Woman in Brazil Gives Birth to Naturally Conceived Triplets

Maria Dulcinéia da Silva, who is just 4 feet (1.20 meters) tall, gave birth to triplet girls in April 2014 in the Planalto neighborhood on the west side of Natal, Brazil. The babies were born early—at 29 weeks and five days.

Her story quickly spread across Brazil, and many people stepped up to help her with donations and support. Maria lives on her own and doesn’t have contact with her birth parents or adoptive family. The pregnancy was not planned, and the babies’ father left her after finding out she was pregnant.

All three daughters were named Maria:
Maria da Luz, the first to arrive, was wide-eyed and cried loudly—like she was saying, “We’re here!”
Maria Esperança, the second baby, came quietly and held tightly to her mother’s finger, as if clinging to life.
Maria Vitória, the last to be born, surprised everyone by arriving when they thought it was all over—like a small miracle at the end.

Having triplets is rare for women with dwarfism, especially without medical help. Because of her height and age, Maria’s pregnancy was considered high-risk.
